Brooklyn State Sen. Marty Golden paid a hospital visit yesterday to the 74-year-old woman he accidentally ran over with his SUV.
Hariklia Zafiropoulos, 74, was in critical condition at Lutheran Medical Center after Golden hit her at Third Ave. and 84th St. in Bay Ridge on Saturday. Authorities said she had been crossing against the light.
"It's devastating ... it's a terrible accident," said Golden spokesman John Quaglione. "He will probably visit her every day," Quaglione said. "I know right now his focus is on her survival and her recovery."
At Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Bay Ridge yesterday, friends and well-wishers prayed for Zafiropoulos. Church members said she was active in Holy Cross Ladies Philoptohos (Greek for "friend of the poor") for the past 20 years, buying necessities for shutins and others in need.
Neighbors said Zafiropoulos often cleans the foyer and sidewalk in front of her apartment building in Bay Ridge, where she lived alone.
"She doesn't live for herself - she's a person that lives for others," said a close friend of Zafiropoulos who didn't want her name used.
As the woman lit candles and prayed for her friend at Holy Cross, she also expressed sympathy for Golden. "Two good people suffered - one hurt in the body, one hurt in the heart," she said.
Golden, a former city cop, was hit by a car himself when he was an officer. The two-term Republican administered first aid to Zafiropoulos after the accident, Quaglione said.
