Fashion Tweets Ruffles Feathers

New York fashion week officially kicks off this Friday and Twittering fashionistas have already started sending out updates with #NYFW tags.

Among the fashionable set, scoring a runway invitation imparts cachet because shows are invite-only and often, the invitations are non-transferable.

On Monday, the New York Times' blog The Moment told its 9,753 Twitter followers that it was offering up tickets to Project Runway winner Christian Siriano's Feb. 19th show.

The designer's boyfriend, Brad Walsh, took to his blog to complain: "The last thing this show needs is an army of random Twitterers thinking they have a chance getting in, or some sixteen year old having access to the RSVP info. Some of Christian's young fans already found my phone number on the internet and call more often than is probably healthy, just on the chance that maybe they will get to hear him in the background." (Walsh appears to have subsequently removed the post). He also notified Mr. Siriano's press team.

Not long after, the blog rescinded the offer but didn't back off the idea of sharing invitations, tweeting: Christian Siriano's press person wasn't into it. Sorry... Let you know if that changes. What nyfw invite do you guys want the most?

While fashion week invites are occasionally discreetly passed along among editors, a public offering of coveted invites is not accepted. (Earlier this week, New York Magazine's The Cut reported that scalpers were offering tickets to shows on Craigslist). Even holding a hard invitation to a show doesn't guarantee entry, however; RSVPs are typically submitted ahead of time and even then, guests must check-in at the door.

The Moment's editor, Jonathan S. Paul, says his offer was only half-serious and that he received only 8 replies. After contacting Mr. Siriano's press team at LaForce-Stevens, the publicists told Mr. Paul that he couldn't fob off the invite to his readers.

"Since I'm a blog editor and we have very rigorous fashion week coverage, I have to sit at my desk and run the blog all week. Glamorous!," Mr. Paul said in an email. "So it's nothing especially personal about Siriano's show, it just happened to be the one I had just opened."

As to lasting repurcussions in fashion's clubby world following his controversial tweet, Mr. Paul was sanguine. "From what I can tell, my tweet hasn't resulted in getting me blacklisted from any shows. But I will never know because I won't go to most of them," he added.
