When Bronx bride Mildred Carty was searching the Web for affordable wedding options last month, she came across a quirky option that didn't involve a church or city hall: Getting hitched, Vegas-style, in a New York City storefront.

"Wedding Chapel," the latest incarnation of Grand Opening, a Lower East Side-based collective that reinvents their artists' space every three months, now offers both quickie weddings and mock ceremonies for adventurous couples looking to tie the knot, or just have some fun.

"I'm really not traditional, in the least. I just wanted it to be fun," says Carty, who opted to partake in Wedding Chapel's services July 25 and married her beau of six years, Daniel Mateo, in a strapless white wedding dress. "[The set up] took two weeks, tops. Which is great -- less pressure on being a bride, " she says.

Getting hitched the next night were Taleen Kalenderian and Dickson Wong. Not a real-life couple, the two best friends rented the chapel for two hours, professed their (friendship) love for each other and danced with their friends.

According to Grand Opening's ordained minister, Rev. Kevin Fey -- who also takes on DJ-ing duties -- the most memorable wedding so far was a Texas-themed party in which the bride and groom and most of the guests wore cowboy hats. "I think she came down the aisle to Whitesnake. Things got rowdier from there," he says. (Confetti is now banned as a result.)

Grand Opening co-owner Ben Smyth says that seeing how people choose to adapt the space is rewarding and even mock marriages can carry a tinge of sentiment. When the service begins, even pretend marriages feel serious. "Everyone sits back at that moment and realizes what they're doing, whether it's mock or real," Smyth says. "It's like 'Oh, this is probably more intense than I'd originally expected.' " (He's right. I held a mock wedding to staff groom Damian Boyd-Boffa and... oh, man. Just watch the video below)

The chapel is open through August. A half-hour ceremony costs $100.
