Top Chef Masters recap by Elva Ramirez

'Top Chef Masters' debuted a goofy Quickfire challenge last night, when each chef was charged with preparing a dish inspired by a "Simpsons" character. Show creator Matt Groening, writer Matt Selman and voice star Hank Azaria judged, with Azaria riffing in several of the character's voices. Susur Lee, who had to get tips on who this Marge Simpson was all about from a fellow chef, turned out pork chops with purple mashed potatoes in the semblance of the character. All the dishes, including an Indian lunch for Apu and a dessert dish for Moe, were happily chowed down. Rick Moonen, who snuck in shrimp instead of beef for a Homer-inspired "sloppy joe" with truffle chips took the day's win.

The chefs could barely savor passing their relatively easy Quickfire, though. Waiters wheeled in two tables of proteins, as Kelly Choi announced the week's challenge. For the aptly-named "Scary Surf & Turf," chefs had to pick from eyebrow-raising proteins like black chicken, geoduck and kangaroo.

Nearly all the chefs were unfamiliar with their proteins. The energy of the room plummets from last episode's mania to a somber thoughfulness. Jonathan Waxman, normally unflappable, admits to wandering around Whole Foods "in a fog," and later, he says he woke up at 3 a.m. with anxiety about how to proceed. Susan Feniger decides to treat her sea cucumbers like any other fish and proceeds to marinate them. Only Susur Lee (of course) is unruffled. "I'm not afraid," he says. "You're talking to a Chinese person. I grew up with all these things around me."

The judges for this round include two extreme food eaters, Andew Zimmern and Marc Moss, plus two local food bloggers (!) Bill Esparza and Eddie Lin.

Susur Lee and Rick Moonen impress the judges with their dishes, which both feature monkfish liver and black chicken. Susur's monkfish's flavor is more pronounced than Rick's, which nabs Susur two five-star ratings- and another high win, with 19 out of 20 stars.

Jody, Jonathan and Marcus linger at the bottom. Jonathan and Marcus sent out dishes in need of editing, while Jody is punished for a too-rare goat leg. Backstage, the chefs sit crestfallen, commiserating over what they could have done better. Although she took the crown just one episode ago, Jody's luck runs out.
