A motley crew of journalists gathered yesterday afternoon at Milk Studios' penthouse for a press conference on an upcoming music and arts events.
The Creators Project, a collaboration between Vice and Intel, is a multi-disciplinary showcase for art, film and music by emerging artists. New York's all-day event, to take place on June 26, is expected to draw around 2,000 people throughout the day and another 2,500 for the evening concerts. Musical acts include Sleigh Bells, Diplo and Mark Ronson. The party then jumps to London, Seoul, Sao Paolo and culminates in a three-day event in Beijing. Tickets are free and will be available through the Creators Project website.
Vice co-founder Shane Smith wouldn't disclose the total cost to put on a globe-hopping party but said, "It's not as expensive as it seems." Most artists were happy to collaborate and will not get paid for their performances, while other costs were negotiated down, he said. "We're already talking about year two."
Given that tickets will be free, and Vice is already considering a second event, what is the magazine's barometer for a successful party? "My metric of success would be traffic on the site," Smith said. "We want people to come watch the videos... and how happy the people are who come to the events."
Music bloggers at the event were atwitter over the music program. So was ambassador Mark Ronson, fresh from a music video shoot in Los Angeles for his new album, due out in September. Ronson will be performing at all five events and is already plotting his performance. "When you're performing at a party and you know that N.A.S.A., Sleigh Bells and Interpol are performing, you better have some mind-blowing stuff," Ronson said.
