Elva Ramirez: The Second Series of The Day Before Premieres

Will Narciso Rodriguez's dress get done on time? Why did Alexander Wang rip up the carpet at his runway venue? Where does the Wall Street Journal sit at a Diane von Furstenberg show?

We know the answers, because we've watched the second season of 'The Day Before,' which returns to the Sundance Channel on Sept. 8th at 10 p.m.

The series previously cataloged the pre-collection chaos of Proenza Schouler, Sonia Rykiel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Karl Lagerfeld at Fendi. This season's six-episode arc also follows Donatella Versace, Peter Copping's debut at Nina Ricci and Jeremy Scott.

Every designer collection is the same in the big details (sketches, then samples, then fittings, then castings, more fittings, then the show) but unique in minutiae (this is the season when all the shoes break at Nina Ricci). 'The Day Before', under the direction of Loic Prigent, imposes a recognizable template (the last 36 hours or before a runway show), before teasing out the small moments that differentiate one designer's way of working from another. Versace, for example, is only one of two labels to hold a full dress rehearsal before the show. Quote Donatella: "I love drama."

In the few hours that Prigent and his team are there, they establish an easy rapport with designers, leading to off-script moments like an upside down DVF doing yoga and the frayed nerves of design assistants driven to tears by last-minute demands.

There's also that moment when DVF checks in on seating for her show, and asks, "Where is the Wall Street Journal? That's your most important...That's the only national paper we have. Where is it?" (In our private viewing lounge, otherwise known as our living room, we squeaked, "Yay!") When DVF contests that the WSJ team is seated too far away, and her publicists argue for further-away seating, she says, "Well, I don't like them either, but you have to seat them..." (Back in Brooklyn: "Awww...") They were talking about us! To be fair, there were at least five WSJ reporters at the most recent DVF show, when the company didn't have to accommodate more than one ticket request.

Watch a short scene with DVF, as she discusses her old friend, Andy Warhol:
